Common Questions

Do I need a Cheddar Up card reader to use point of sale?

No. While we think using the Cheddar Up card reader results in a superior point-of-sale checkout experience, you do have other options that don’t involve purchasing hardware. Those options include using Tap on Mobile (an amazing feature that requires no card reader but works only with NFC credit cards) or entering the credit card number manually.

Can I use a non-Cheddar Up card reader?

No. Only a card reader purchased from Cheddar Up will work with the Cheddar Up mobile apps. If you have a card reader from another payment platform, it will not work with Cheddar Up.

Does Cheddar Up still support its BBPOS card reader?

Yes. Prior to the M2 card reader (shown above), which Cheddar Up is currently selling, Cheddar Up had a black BBPOS Bluetooth card reader. The BBPOS card reader is still supported and will be supported at least through 2024, and likely beyond. We also have a getting started guide specific to the BBPOS card reader that is available to users.

Can I return my Cheddar Up card reader?
No. Unfortunately, there are no refunds on Cheddar Up card readers.
What do I do if my reader will not connect?
If your reader will not connect, there's likely a valid (and fixable!) reason for it. Check out our Getting Started with Your Card Reader Guide, which includes troubleshooting tips. In addition, the most common reasons why a reader will not connect are because Bluetooth is not toggled on within your device settings, or because the reader was paired within device settings instead of being paired within the Cheddar Up POS payment flow. The guide mentioned above will walk you through this.
What's the best way to train others on using the card reader?
We highly recommend downloading our Getting Started with Your Card Reader Guide and printing it out for anyone helping with point of sale. In addition, if you haven't already, make sure you check out how to use Cheddar Up's Event Code feature--the easiest way for a team of people to collect POS payments (or scan tickets) on the same collection.
